Dr. Hermann: If there was one thing that I could tell a patient who is considering or seeking out plastic surgery, by far, it would be tell them to seek out a plastic surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
But what does that mean? If a doctor is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, that means that they actually have done a plastic surgery training program. Likewise, they passed a rigorous exam to make sure that they were certified to perform these procedures.
It may be hard to believe but there are doctors out there who have not done plastic surgery training nor have been board certified that are doing plastic surgery procedures. They get certified by fake boards such as the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery or something similar. That sounds very legitimate, but in reality is not a recognized board certification. Because of that, they are able to do procedures such as breast augmentation or liposuction in their office, which I believe is not right nor do I believe it is safe.
If you are thinking about having plastic surgery, whether it be with me or someone else, please make sure that they are truly a plastic surgeon that has completed a training program that has been certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
