Implant Removal

Removal of breast implants has become a very hot, very popular surgery these days, and there's a couple of reasons for that. First off, you have a lot of women who are now in middle age or older who had breast implants placed when they were very young. Either those implants are starting to have problems, or their bodies have changed, their breasts have just naturally gotten larger as they've gotten older, and they want to take out their breast implants. The other people that sometimes will seek out breast implant removal are people who are suffering from breast implant illness. That's a very rare phenomenon. It only affects about 1% or less of people who get breast implants. But for those people who are affected by it, removing the breast implants has been shown to make them feel better. If you want to have your breast implants removed, it's important to go to a surgeon who does breast implant revision surgery all the time. Being fellowship trained in cosmetic breast surgery, it's one of my areas of expertise, and so we see at least one, if not, more patients every week who come to my practice wanting to remove their breast implants. If you're going to remove breast implants, first of all, it's important the surgeon takes the time to talk to you to go over what is going to be the effect of your breast if you remove those implants. For some people, if they have a fair amount of breast tissue and small implants, you can remove the breast implants, and you don't have to do anything else to reshape the breast. Unfortunately, for a lot of people, removing the breast implants will have a pretty dramatic negative effect on the breast, and you want to make sure that the surgeon can reshape those breasts to make them look like something that you're going to be happy with. Because we do breast revision surgery all the time, we have what I think is almost 100% satisfaction rate with taking out implants. We take out the breast implant, we take out all the scar tissue or the capsule layers, it's called, that's associated around that breast implant, and then we can reshape the breast to give something people really like and are happy with. Also, this is a surgery that has a pretty easy recovery and a very low risk rate. I would say that my patients who have breast implant removal are some of my happiest patients.
